UVA Medical Students and Residents - Buying a home in Charlottesville
Match Day is quickly approaching for hopeful medical residents at the University of Virginia.
Housing options abound for UVA medical residents.
Some Charlottesville housing tips and hints
- Decide whether you want to rent or buy. In 2000, we know of many residents that bought a home and sold upon leaving at a profit. With today’s economy, medical residents have the luxury of being able to wait out the market.
- Popular and affordable neighborhoods conveniently located to UVA are:
- Mill Creek, Mill Creek South, Redfield. These are within 5-10 minutes to the UVA hospital, the historic downtown mall, groceries and shopping, and easily accessible to I-64.
- All three neighborhoods offer townhouses. The typical setup in Mill Creek and Mill Creek South is that of a duplex (only 1 side neighbor) configuration. If you are lucky, you will also have great mountain views, usually facing the sunset.

- In the townhome sections, the association handles mowing and exterior maintenance. This is a godsend for medical residents and other professionals with ultra-busy schedules
- All three are located in Albemarle County, one of the best school systems (if not the best) in the area. You may want to take this into account if you have a family. Even if you don’t have kids, this is good for resale when you are done with your medical residency (good luck
)
- Other things to consider
- Quiet neighborhoods during the day so you can sleep after a night shift
- Safe neighborhood at night for when you come back from a late shift
A final word: you may find that you like Charlottesville so much that you will stay!
