Since the mid-’70s, Lisa’s passion for healthy living has inspired her study of natural forms of health care. In 1978 she became certified as a yoga instructor. She graduated from Kennesaw College in Georgia in 1980 and became a Registered Nurse working in Labor/Delivery/Postpartum and Nursery at in in-hospital Birthing Center. In the years since, she has continued to work as an R.N., doula, and a yoga teacher.

In 2007, Lisa became certified in Firstline Therapy, a therapeutic lifestyle program designed to promote and restore health, prevent degenerative disease, and foster healthy aging.

With her husband Paul Olko, Lisa runs the Green Lake Healing Center in Charlottesville VA.

Paul Olko is a Naturopathic Physician, and Certified practitioner of Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine and Tui Na Acupressure Therapy since 1971. With his wife, Lisa Olko, he runs the Green Lake Healing Center, located in Charlottesville VA.

Paul has studied herbology, natural medicine, bodywork, and philosophy with a variety of luminaries including Viktoras Kulvinskas, Michio Kushi, Vasant Lad, Stan Malstrom, Hua Ching Ni, Swami Satchidananda, and Michael Tierra.

He received his B.S. from Trenton State College in 1975. He received his degree in Naturopathy in 1982 from the Southeastern School of Naturopathy. In 1987 he received certification from the Academy of Oriental Heritage in Vancouver, B.C. In 1988, Paul completed further training in Tui Na massage, Qigong, and Tai Chi at the Florida Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 1989 he completed his Masters and certification as an herbalist from East West Herbal School.

Paul is certified by the National Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Asian Bodywork Therapy and board certified as a Diplomat of Chinese Herbology by the National Council for the Certification of Acupuncturists in Washington, D.C.

Tips for picking a Charlottesville real estate agent

Ask your friends and co-workers for a referral. This is the best way to get an initial set of candidates.
Pick a Charlottesville real estate agent that’s lived in the area for at least 5 years. Charlottesville is a city that grows on you. It really does take at least that long to really know this area intimately (we’ve lived here for more than 10 years and we still discover cool new things about Charlottesville).
Do interview/talk to 2-3 real estate agents. There’s really no such thing as the “best agent” but there’s definitely one that will be a good fit for you.
Does the agent respond to you in a timely manner? Note that some agents have not really gotten used to this whole email/Internet thing. You’d be surprised how many do not check email on a timely basis. Are you getting a timely response to your email inquiries?
To get a sense of whether an agent is Internet savvy, check out their website. Is the website a generic company website? Or does the website contain personalized information about Charlottesville? Does the agent blog? While blogging, twitting, facebooking, etc… is not requirement for being the right agent for you, it does reflect their personality and professionalism. These things can’t be faked, especially in a public forum like the Internet.
Do use a buyer broker realtor. She’ll represent you, and you only. On the flip side, it’s only fair that you go exclusive with that realtor. If you are not too sure about this arrangement, you can limit the length of time of the exclusive period.
Are you buying as an investment or as a home? Or both? This makes a big difference. Especially for investments, do use a realtor that is also an investor so that she’ll know where you’re coming from.
When do you want to move? The market in Charlottesville is seasonal. For example, in March, new residents from the University of Virginia flock to town looking for homes. The Medical school, the Law school and in fact the entire academic village have a seasonal and predictable calendar. Why is this important? The last thing you want to do is to go into a bidding war with folks that essentially have a week to make their decisions… so do shop early!
If you have kids, do ask about the schools they will be attending. If you can, drive by these schools and ask a lot of questions about them. Better yet, get the realtor to drive you around! Note that most schools in the Charlottesville area are quite good in general (yet another reason why we keep getting these #1 rankings of best places to live).
Retiring here? You’d think somebody would build condos, townhomes and houses with a large 1st floor. Those are hard to find in our town. Do ask your realtor about senior-friendly neighborhoods. A good realtor should immediately ask you about your lifestyle and how you intend to “retire” exactly.
Already own an investment property? Ask your realtor about a 1031 tax free exchange. If she doesn’t know what you’re talking about, you are probably talking to the wrong person.
Do shop around for home financing. Ask your real estate agent for recommendations.
And finally, remember that your chosen real estate agent will work very hard for you, including nights and weekends. Contrary to public perception, the life of a realtor is very difficult, with long hours away from family and friends. Real estate agents do not all make 6 figure incomes, especially these days. Those that do have earned it. So once you’ve settled on an agent, please be patient and loyal to them.
